Eco-Processing Film Workshop (Registration Full!)

  • AgX Film Collective 144 Moody Street, 2nd Floor Waltham, MA, 02453 United States (map)

LOMO tank with film fresh from caffenol developer

This workshop will explore alternative (eco/kitchen-sink) processing techniques on black and white film. There are a variety of recipes that yield excellent results. Film developing is never completely environmentally friendly, but you can minimize the risk to yourself and the environment significantly by processing your film with the recipes that we will teach in this class. We will teach both negative and reversal processing with chemicals easily accessible to the average person.

Participants should bring at least one roll of exposed hi-con black and white film that they wish to develop as a negative or positive. You may also feel free to bring your own plant, tea, mushroom, alcoholic beverage to use in your own personal 2nd developer and see what happens.

Participants will be provided with a variety of recipes for all the various eco-compounds including developer, bleach and fix so that they can go home and begin to experiment after the workshop.

What participants can expect to learn and practice in this workshop:

All participants will use a caffenol recipe as the first developer coupled with a hydrogen peroxide bleach process. Following that they can choose to develop their film in caffenol or an eco-process recipe of their choice.

If they wish to develop their film as negative, they can use the "eco-process" of their choice as a first developer with the option to choose a table salt (it takes about 2 hours) or regular fix.

INSTRUCTORS: This public workshop is being offered by AgX members Kathryn Ramey and Mike Piso. Kathryn will be contacting participants who sign up to assess what processes to focus on.
