Join Janet Benn and Kimberly Forero-ArnÍas from the AGX Film Collective for a workshop in experimental filmmaking. Visitors will learn the basics of film animation with 35mm film using simple lines and shapes. We will create mini movies by drawing directly onto film with permanent markers, stickers, and waxy pencils. Visitors can watch their films, take them home, or have them made into video files to be sent through email for later viewing. Boston Children’s Museum
AgX (pronounced A Gee Ex) is a Boston-area collective of artists who share resources, equipment, camaraderie and knowledge with a focus on the creation and appreciation of the moving image arts. Embedded within the emulsion of photochemical film, vilver halides are crystals composed of silver and one of the halogens (Br, Cl or I), often give the notation AgX. https://agxfilm.org
Janet Benn is an Animation Director and Artist who began by studying experimental film making in black and white, then was drawn to traditional 2D animation production for TV. She has worked on projects for Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” in New York City. Her favorite work of all was done in the studio of John and Faith Hubley who were her teachers at Yale Graduate School of Art, where she earned her MFA. Eventually Janet taught the art of animation to college students and adults in many New England colleges. Now, as a member of AgX Film Collective, Janet Benn is working on new projects and teaching animation techniques for experimental filmmaking at AgX in Waltham, MA.
Kimberly Forero-Arnías is a filmmaker and animator who works with 16mm film. She loves playing with time and movement and is always looking for new ways to understand how she sees and moves on this planet we call Earth. Her work has screened across the United States at Festivals including Flex Fest, Ann Arbor, Chicago Underground, and Big Muddy as well as internationally at Images Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. A recipient of Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant in 2013 and the SMFA Traveling Fellowship in 2019, she currently lives and works in Boston, MA and holds an MFA from Emerson College.
