An Evening with Estonian Animator Ülo Pikkov

Join us for a rare opportunity to view a collection of works by visiting Estonian animator Ülo Pikkov in person, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker hosted by AgX member Bryan Parcival.

Doors open at 6:30pm. Program begins at 7:00pm.

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5-20 to support the filmmaker. No one will be turned away due to a lack of funds.

An experimental documentary shot on 16mm film using a Bolex

‘TIL WE MEET AGAIN (2021) 14’

A 14 minute animated documentary about an old lady who returns home after sixty years. The film is based on a true story and taking place on a remote island of Baltic sea. All objects in the film are made of materials found on that island, island Ruhnu.

THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE (2020) 9’

A story of a mother and son and the race against a turtle where you always lose.

LETTING GO (2017) 11’

Letting Go is an animated therapy with a young girl from orphanage who wants to let go of the shadows that haunt her past.

TIK-TAK (2014) 10’

Watchmaker controls the time, but the mouse living in the watchmaker's workshop controls the clocks... This is a film about time and its ephemeral nature.

DIALOGOS (2008) 5’

An experimental animated film, where all the visual material of the film is drawn directly onto the film stock. The film is founded on absurd humour. The theme of the film is contemporary high-tech society, where too many sign systems exist.

About the filmmaker: Ülo Pikkov is an internationally renowned filmmaker, producer and film scholar. Pikkov studied animation at the Turku Arts Academy in Finland and since 1996 has directed several award-winning animation films. He has published articles on film and written fiction books for children and adults. In 2005 he graduated from the Institute of Law in University of Tartu, focusing on the media and author’s rights. Pikkov is the author of “Animasophy, Theoretical Writings on the Animated Film” (2011). In 2018 Pikkov got his doctoral degree at the Estonian Academy of Arts with thesis “Anti-Animation: Textures of Eastern European Animated Film” and today he works as a professor of animation at the same institution.
