  • 144 Moody Street Building 18 Waltham, MA, United States (map)

AgX is pleased to present a program of films from the Paris-based experimental cinema workshop,  l'Etna. Founded in 1997 with the expressed goals of keeping filmmaking accessible and sustainable for its local artists, l’Etna provides a space for creation, workshops and exchange around experimental cinema through regular screenings and discussions. This program features eight works spanning most of the organization's more than quarter century of existence, and is presented by current l'Etna member, Malo Sutra Fish, who will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A.

PROGRAM:

Scum Show, 2022, Malo Sutra Fish, 2 mins

Music video for the song “Scum Show” by the Osees. Shot on Super 8 at Le Trianon, Paris, on June 29th 2022.

This Little Light of Mine, 2021, Malo Sutra Fish, 8 mins

This film answers the question: “How does it feel to have a seizure?” as well as asking the follow-up: “How do I get to be a filmmaker as a photosensitive epileptic?”

Epilepsy is both violent for the person living it and for the people around witnessing it. Often misunderstood, there can be an ambiguous feeling of fear and shame leading to deep inner turmoil. And as in any crisis, our whole identity is shaken. But as in any crisis there is a silver lining - something to learn. The lotus grows in the thickest mud, and poetry does sometimes come from the darkest pain.

Perdue, 2020, Julien Pluchard, 7 mins

A meeting of several myths: shadows in movement, which the filmmaker associates with cave paintings; the voice of the "sacred monster" Sarah Bernhardt, the world's first star, as she delivers the monologue of Phèdre a hundred years ago; an attempt to exit the labyrinth.

Mue(s), 2015, Fréderique Menant, 11 mins

Ecdysis
Traversing the solstices
Within the shadow, a sigh
Beneath the skin, a passage

Ether, 2003, Philippe Cote, 9 mins

Liquefied pictures morph into substances of airborne [volatile] lights. The eye does not have hold anymore on forms with a now unsteady outline. By successive births, these throw themselves little by little in different conditions of color until they are embodied in the completion of a picture.

Le Cristallin, 2002, Carole Arcega, 6 mins

Le Cristalin is a film in which one forgets the photography of cinema to find oneself in its film strip, where the film is a living organ. The fantasy of a film as a physical continuation of the body... It looks like a vision from the inside of an eye. Dazzled, the pupil retracts and then dilates. Light, the immediate material of the film, is what makes it exist.

Face à ce qui se présente, 2003, Catherine Bareau, 14 mins

What is there to film, what is there to hear? What story to tell or keep quiet? How can we show less to feel this slowing down, this prolonged murmur of sounds and images on the screen? A film poem, and also manifesto, letter, self-portrait.

Vert6, 2023, Julien Fallecker, 6 mins

approx runtime: 64 mins
